You might not think of it as a massage, but the act of sitting on a massage table while your body is being massaged is considered one of the most relaxing and pleasurable parts of the massage.
If you’re not sure how you feel when you’re massaged, this is definitely one place to ask.

M.L. Smith is a licensed therapist in Burnaby, B.V., who has been practicing massage therapy for over 25 years.
She says many clients who are nervous about their massage appointments have been using their phones to contact the therapist and ask for help.
“People will call, text or email asking to meet at a massage,” Smith said.
“Sometimes they’ll ask to come on the massage table and there will be people who can do that, but it’s so much more likely that people will find themselves in a situation where they’re going to be able to have their comfort levels lifted, their confidence lifted.”
Smith says people are often reluctant to seek help, and sometimes people who are seeking help don’t know how to use their phone or don’t want to talk about it.
Smith said some therapists use the term “buzzing,” which refers to the idea that people feel anxious because they’re getting distracted, and that’s definitely a problem.
“They’re actually being a bit too much of a buzzkill,” she said.
Misdirection is also common.
“It’s often when people are anxious or nervous about a situation that they are more likely to try and hide from it,” Smith added.
She said many people feel pressured to have a massage.
“People feel like they’re being told that it’s going to fix everything, that it has to be perfect, and there’s a lot of anxiety in those situations,” she added.
“If you’re going into a situation and you’re nervous about being touched, it’s not going to help.”
The best way to have an effective massage is to ask for it, Smith said, and be open to the experience.
“If you have anxiety and you feel nervous or anxious, you need to find a massage therapist who’s going through that,” she suggested.
